A train line heading into Swindon has been unexpectedly blocked after a train broke down en route.

The engineering train was travelling between Trowbridge and Chippenham when it broke down on Sunday morning, causing disruptions to the schedule for the day.

Train services between Westbury and Swindon via Melksham are likely to be cancelled this morning as a result.

Great Western Railway (GWR) announced the news online at 8.44am and warned that the delays and disruptions were likely to last throughout the morning.

A spokesperson for the company said: “An engineering train has broken down on the line between Trowbridge and Chippenham.

“Arrangements are being made to have the train moved, but until this is done train services will diverting via an alternative route which means we are unable to call at Melksham.

“Customers travelling from Melksham are requested to make use of the Customer Help Point systems available, or contact National Rail Enquiries on 03457 484 950 detailing the total number of passengers travelling, and their intended destinations.

“Customers travelling to Melksham should speak to station staff.

“We're sorry for the delay to your journey. We will update with more information when we have it.”

GWR expect the issue to be resolved by 10am.
