These photos show the changing face of Canal Walk in Swindon's town centre.
Images from Swindon Libraries' Local Studies archive capture nostalgic moments from the 1970s, when the Brunel Shopping Centre was under construction, and what the fountain at the crossroads of Regent Street, Canal Walk, Bridge Street, and the Parade used to look like in 1968.
In the 1980s, Threshold Records and Harris Carpets occupied large units on our high street, near a couple of retro phone booths, and Peter Richards and Herald traded further along the pathway.
Trees lined the pedestrianised street in the 1980s, and the Golden Lion statue which had been in place since the '50s continued to be an iconic landmark for years to come.
Shoppers flocked to Wallis, House of Fraser, and Selfridges in the mid-90s, the Brunel Arcade's entrance looked very different, and the connecting corridor between the Arcade and the rest of the shopping centre was mostly empty before The Crossing food hub came about in the 2010s.
