THE Bespoke Guardians Swindon Wildcats responded to consecutive defeats by claiming maximum points courtesy of wins over Peterborough Phantoms and Hull Seahawks at the weekend.
After losing to Sheffield Steeldogs and Telford Tigers, Swindon shocked third-place Peterborough 2-1 in a low-scoring affair at the Link Centre on Saturday.
The Phantoms’ Alex Padelek dispatched Glenn Billing’s pass at 8:35 to put the visitors ahead, but Aaron Nell struck while Peterborough were on a powerplay of their own to equalise at 17:08.
Following a gritty middle period where both teams cancelled each other out, Colby Tower scored what turned out to be the winner at 42:19.
A multitude of penalties occurred in the remaining minutes, but Swindon saw off the Phantoms’ threat to kick off the weekend in style.
Post-match, speaking to the Wildcats’ media team, Nell gave great credit to his netminder, Renny Marr.
Nell said: “In the first two periods, I thought we cancelled each other out. But I thought in the third period, we were by far the better team and we deserved to win.
“Renny kept us in it during the first two periods, but he didn’t have too much to do in the third.
“But I thought [brother] Jordan was incredible in the third period for Peterborough. He stopped them from being three, four, or five down.”
The following night, Swindon cruised to a 6-1 success at Hull after recovering from a slow start on Humberside.
Russ Cowley popped up on the first powerplay of the game to hand Swindon the advantage at 16:22, but at 29:42, former Wildcat, Emil Svec fired home an equaliser.
Eddie Bebris re-established the visitors’ lead at 33:01, and in the third period Swindon set about pulling off into the distance.
Nell scored first at 43:54 prior to the final three goals in two-and-a-half minutes late on. Floyd Taylor netted in the 54th minute before Cowley struck in the 56th. Tomasz Malasinski capped off an excellent night for the Wildcats will the final goal at 56:54.
