Charlie Austin ended the season with a bang as he bagged a brace as Swindon Town drew 3-3 against Morecambe at the County Ground.

The opening half brought plenty of twists and turns as Austin opened the scoring early before Joe Adams and Adam Fairclough had the game swing back the other way before Austin netted his second to level it up once more.

Williams Kokolo then crashed home from a rapid counterattack in the second half, but Gwion Edwards fired home to see the spoils shared.

In what could be the final game of a fabulous career at Swindon, Austin gave the fans one last taste of what he can do with a final double.

The Morfuni Meridian was officially etched as the season came to a close with Swindon in 19th with 54 points.

Gavin Gunning made three changes for the final game of the season, with Sean McGurk’s return the headline, alongside Jake Cain and Conor McCarthy. Jaxon Brown was also brought onto the bench for the first time since Tranmere Rovers away in December as one of four academy players in the matchday squad.

It didn’t take long for Swindon to take the lead as Joel McGregor darted forwards and had to be brought down by Fairclough on the right side of the box. McGurk whipped in the resulting free-kick straight onto the head of Austin at the back post to put Town ahead.

Despite the early goal for Swindon, the Shrimps had looked the more enterprising in the early stages. They were energetic in their press and were finding openings through a slightly lethargic build-up from Town.

After 15 minutes they were deservedly level as Cameron Smith had the ball out on the left and sent in a low ball that made its way to Adams. His shot took a big deflection off of Harley Hunt and wrong-footed Bycroft to score.

Then the Shrimps were in front. Fairclough stole in behind McGregor down the right and sent a ball into Charlie Brown in the middle. His shot came back off McCarthy and then flicked off the heel of the striker and into the path of the 16-year-old to score.

Even this did not wake Swindon up from their final day slumber and they still looked well off the pace. Morecambe were not making loads of good chances but were more slick in possession and more industrious without the ball. By contrast, Swindon were doing little to give fans a sense that something was building for next season.

But all of a sudden there was a spark as Frazer Blake-Tracy got on the ball and charged through the middle of the visitors. He got his head up and slid a pass into the path of Austin and he fired home beyond the goalkeeper to level. In what could be the farewell concert, he was playing all of the hits.

The game reached the break with neither side looking particularly threatening after parity had been restored. The opening 45 minutes had produced plenty in the way of goals, but it had still been low on real moments of quality.

The scoreline continued to be misleading of the general levels of excitement in the second half, with the ball going from end-to-end without either side looking like they were going to score.

A free-kick won on the near touchline gave McGurk another opportunity to create some danger. His cross went deep to the far post, with McCarthy, Austin, and Blake-Tracy all lurking, but David Tutonda was able to stretch and just about avert the danger.

Morecambe then had an opening as Cameron Smith’s cross deflected off of Kokolo and into the path of Adams on the edge of the area. With the ball bouncing up he tried his luck with a volley that bounced narrowly wide of the far post.

Shortly after Tutonda had denied McGregor the chance to gallop down the right with a perfectly-timed tackle, Paul Glatzel was played in behind and as he prepared to slot a finish beyond Adam Smith, the defender seemed to extend his leg to cleanly knock the ball away from danger.

Gunning handed yet another academy player a league debut in the second half as goalkeeper Redman Evans replaced Jack Bycroft for the final 20 minutes as both teams rung the changes.

But once more there was a brief flash of quality and the ball was in the net. Substitutes Zac Elbouzedi, Aaron Drinan, and Dawson Devoy combined on a sweeping counterattack down the right. The man on loan from Milton Keynes Dons swung in a cross for the run of Kokolo to slam Swindon ahead.

With four minutes remaining, Evans parried a Morecambe cross out to the side, but it fell for Edwards to power home into the roof of the net.
