Police on the M4 near Swindon caught a drug driver from London who works for Uber part-time.

Oshane Samuels, of St Gabriels Close in Wanstead, appeared in the dock at Swindon Magistrates' Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to one driving offence.

The 35-year-old drove a Toyota Prius eastbound on the M4 between Junctions 14 and 15 on November 20, 2023, when the proportion of Delta-9- tetrahydrocannabinol in his blood - 6.2 micrograms of drug per litre of blood - exceeded the specified limit.

Tom Power, prosecuting, said: "Officers responded to a report of someone driving erratically, speeding up and slowing down and swerving on the motorway.

"A mile before Junction 14, they saw [the car] in lane two swerving into lanes one and three.

"It eventually stopped on the hard shoulder near Junction 14. They smelled cannabis coming from the vehicle.

"[Samuels] looked tired, had bloodshot eyes, and kept falling asleep in the [police] car."

The defendant, representing himself, said he had smoked cannabis at a party four days before being stopped by police, and that he took on part-time work with Uber because he "barely earn[s] enough from [his] main job to survive".

He received a 12-month driving ban and a £542 fine, and must also pay £85 in court costs plus £217 to fund victim services.
