CRUSHED car parts were strewn across a lane on the A420, forcing it to close after a lorry overturned near Shrivenham.

The driver, not believed to be from the Swindon area, was taken to Great Western Hospital with back injuries following the single-vehicle accident, which happened at the Watchfield roundabout at around 9.40am today.

Bundled scrap vehicle parts, which were being transported by an RD Robinson HGV, were spread across the roundabout’s lane for around six hours.

Traffic on the A420 was kept moving in both directions, despite parts of the road having to be shut by police.

A small part of High Street on the edge of Watchfield was cordoned off to allow emergency workers to clean-up.

Three recovery agents worked around the clock to ensure the debris was cleared in time for the rush hour.

PC Martin Mann, who was at the scene to divert traffic away from the incident, said: “Nobody else was involved. It was a single-vehicle accident.

“The driver, who is from outside our area, was taken to hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries.

“The clean-up looks set to take a long time.

“The lorry was carrying bundled scrap parts when it overturned which are now all over the road.”

A vehicle from the Highways Agency was in attendance.

Two fire engines, from Stratton and Faringdon, also arrived at the scene but the driver had already been freed from the lorry.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “When they arrived there wasn’t much for them to do as the man had already been freed from the vehicle.”
