Don Giovanni, Mozart's flamboyant and rakish opera, is based on the amorous adventures of the famous Italian lover Don Juan.
The current production by The Royal Opera House is being screened live on to the Big Screen in Swindon's Wharf Green on Friday, July 3 from 6.30pm.
The opera was first performed in Prague in 1787 under the name of Il Dissoluto Punito meaning The Rake Punished. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart conducted the opera himself, and it went down a storm. It has gone on beguiling audiences down the years, from staunch opera fans to first timers dipping their toes into what many believed was an elitist world.
Don Giovanni is an adventure story, a ghostly tale with a moral message. It has a huge dollop of comedy, witty exchanges and a touch of farce with the intricate relationships, especially between Don Giovanni and his long suffering servant Leporello.
In the Swindon screening, the opera will be under the guiding hand of Kasper Holten as producer. His interpretation of the opera focuses on the power of the creative imagination, Don Giovanni's successful seductions are because he weaves wonderful illusions, but it is all a vain attempt to escape his own mortality.
Everyone is encouraged to bring their own picnic to enjoy the al fresco opera in the town centre with the screening beginning at 7pm. To register for free tickets email tickets@inswindon.com. - Flicky Harrison
