COMIC artist and writer Kev F Sutherland has been showing pupils at Wanborough Primary School a few tricks of the trade.
Mr Sutherland, who has created artwork for the likes of Beano, Marvel and Doctor Who, visits schools, colleges, libraries and art centres nationwide to deliver his comic art masterclass.
On Monday and Tuesday he was at Wanborough Primary School to give over 100 pupils an insight into his creative and colourful trade.
As part of the lessons, the writer and comic artist, taught the pupils to create their own comic characters and write exciting storylines.
Each pupils had the opportunity to create their own comic book page with the work of the each of the four Key Stage Two classes, years three to six, being put together to make a four class comics.
Inside the comic, the children were able to create and draw their own characters before creating exciting adventures for them to undertake.
On Monday year six pupils created Knock! Knock! Blood Bath! while the year three pupils entitled their creation, The Gang of the Gangsters.
Beth Watts, year five teacher and literacy co-ordinator at the school, said: “The children have really enjoyed it, he’s very enthusiastic and humorous. They have responded really well to him.
“They came up with some really interesting and wonderful ides borrowing a bit form here and there and creating some wonderful comics.
“It’s enjoyment of the subject really, we are trying to get the children to enjoy what they are doing, reading and looking at comics.
“It’s been brilliant, it’s been very enjoyable for them they have got immersed in it and it’s been a positive experience for them definitely.”
In addition to a copy of the class comic Mr Sutherland, who has been creating comics for over 25 years, also created a caricature of each of the children for them to take home.
Caricatures of the staff will be put on display in the school at a later date.
“They have been well received, they have been kind to the staff, we are thinking of putting them up in school somewhere,” Miss Watts added.
The work is aimed at helping the pupils with literacy skills such as story creation, containing a beginning, middle and end, as well as an awareness of writing for a particular audience.
Away from comics, Mr Sutherland is the man behind the world-famous Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre, which is currently touring the UK and will appear at the Edinburgh Fringe in August. He is also the creator and executive producer of situation comedy showcase, The Sitcom Trials.
