A FESTIVAL of colour, culture and celebrations saw hundreds of people from the Hindu community in Swindon party in style.
The event on Friday named Dashera, which is the national festival of Nepal, was organised by a group of ex-Gurkhas at the Punjabi Community Centre.
It is the triumph of good over evil and is not only celebrated in India but also in other countries like Bangladesh and Malaysia.
“It is one of the greatest festivals,” said JB Gurung, 71, who helped arrange the day and is also an ex-Gurkha and served in the British Army for 23 years.
“It has the same importance as Christmas does to Christians. There were around 500 members there.
“The aim was to celebrate our culture and show our traditions to the next generations as we want it to always be alive.”
There was dancing, lavish food and singers who flew from Nepal for the event. Many members of the Nepalese Association of Wiltshire (NAW) were also there.
“We all really enjoyed the party,” JB added. “It was fantastic and everyone agreed.
“Our thanks go to the committee and our community.”
