RECORD Store Day, on Saturday, is extra special this year as it marks the 10th anniversary of this worldwide celebration of the vinyl record.
Special vinyl releases and collectors’ items are made exclusively for independent shops and, as none of the special releases are available on-line or in high street chain stores, vinyl fans are expected to queue all night to be the first in line for their favourite artist’s releases. Across the globe hundreds of artists also use Record Store Day to make special appearances and exclusive performances.
Red House Records, within Holmes Music in Faringdon Road, was opened by vinyl fan and musician Paul Holmes who is already making plans for this to be a real event for both Swindon and national collectors.
“We opened in May 2013 and this will be our fourth Record Store Day,” he said.
“It just gets better every year. The vinyl revival is still going from strength to strength as younger music fans discover vinyl for the first time and those who grew up with records rediscover the unique experience of putting a record on the turntable.
“In 2016 the value of vinyl sales overtook downloads for the first time ever.”
The releases due for this year include records from David Bowie and Pink Floyd, and these are likely to be in high demand. Other highlights include titles from The Smiths, Prince, U2, Motorhead and Aqua’s Barbie Girl on shocking pink 7-inch vinyl.
Matt added: “The rules of RSD are very strict and mean that shops cannot reserve any vinyl, but if we get requests for certain titles we can ensure that we get enough copies on our order.
“The limited availability is why last year we had over 60 customers waiting for us to open at 8am, some diehard fans had been there since 3am.
“Our neighbours from Darkroom Espresso will be on hand with their superb coffee from 7am.
"To reward early birds, the first 10 coffees are on us, plus we also have 20 RSD 2017 Tote bags to give away.”
It is also traditional for shops to have live guests and Red House Records will be hosting a performance by guitarist Nick Harper and a signing exclusive by Grim Reaper and Onslaught vocalist, Steve Grimmett. Gaz Brookfield and Bradley Cowtan will also be performing live.
The store opens at at 8am and the fun continues on Sunday at 10am. Visit www.redhouserecords.co.uk or call 01793 526393.
