THE amount of rubbish in the town centre creates a bad first impression to those visiting the area, says a former Swindon councillor.
Peter Mallinson, a former Conservative councillor, said that the problem was particularly pronounced near the bus stops in Fleming Way, meaning it will be among the first things people visiting the town centre see.
Speaking about one location between the bus stops and The Parade, Mr Mallinson said: "There was paper, glass bottles, human faeces – the whole area was an absolute disgrace.
"I know lots of people complain about how disgusting the town centre is, with empty shops, broken windows and homeless people, but this is a daily reminder to people who come in on the bus.
"It is an absolute eyesore and a disgrace, and it must be a health hazard as well.
"Why isn’t the council keeping it clean?"
A spokesman for Swindon Borough Council said that the specific issues near the Parade had not been reported but that someone from the street cleaning team would be sent to the site.
