SWINDON town centre toilets damaged by fire over six months ago have only just reopened.

Flames caused considerable damage to the toilets on Market Street, just off Farnsby Street, sometime before September 2022.

As well as smoke and fire damage, the fire service also had to break down several cubicle doors to make sure there was no one in danger.

At the time, Freshbrook Councillor Sean Wilson warned that this closure would have a "devastating impact" on disabled people as this was the only fully accessible Changing Places within the town centre.

Changing Places toilets are fully accessible toilets with an adult-sized changing bench, a centrally located toilet, a ceiling hoist and a height-adjustable sink meaning they provide more assistance than standard disabled toilets.

But now, the campaign group Mums on a Mission (MOAM) have celebrated that the toilet has reopened.

"Six months after it was damaged by a fire, we're told the Changing Places toilet in Swindon town centre has re-opened today," a spokesperson said.

"Huge thanks to all of you who've been keeping us updated on the closure and how it's impacted you - it's helped us keep the pressure on Swindon Borough Council to get it back open.

"It's great to know that if we pop into town, we can meet our children's toileting needs in a safe, hygienic and dignified way!"
