TEENAGER Shannon Saunders is currently enjoying success on the big screen all over the country.
But while you won’t see her face in the hit Disney movie Tangled, you will hear her voice.
Because singer Shannon belts out the song I Saw The Light in the UK version of the film.
The film is based on the fairy story Rapunzel – the tale about the princess in the tower whose hair is 70 feet long – and Shannon, from Wootton Bassett, recorded the song at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, made famous by The Beatles.
“It was really cool,’’ said Shannon, 16, who lives with parents Linda and John.
“The studios were amazing. I went with my dad and we took loads of photos on the zebra crossing.”
I Saw The Light has been nominated for an Oscar, but Shannon won’t be performing it at the Hollywood ceremony on February 27 because it is the US version of the song that is up for an award.
But she is delighted it has been nominated and the singer has already seen Tangled three times – at an exclusive screening in the Disney Studios, at the premiere in London and at the cinema in Swindon.
The self taught guitarist was first discovered by Disney Channel UK on You Tube.
She was asked to audition for the popular TV talent contest My Camp Rock and beat off hundreds of youngsters to get through to the final four.
“I was on TV doing workshops with John Modi, voice coach from X Factor and Elizabeth Honan, choreographer, who works with Cheryl Cole,’’ said Shannon.
Her hard work paid off and she was voted the overall winner through online voting from thousands of Camp Rock viewers. Shannon was told that she had won during assembly at Wootton Bassett School in front of pupils and teachers.
The singer attended Stagecoach Drama School in Swindon for three years and has fond memories of her time there.
Shannon, who is taking a diploma in songwriting at Bristol Institute of Modern Music, said: “Stagecoach helped me a great deal. I won the Stagecoach talent show in 2009. I went back to visit and signed loads of autographs.’’ l The Disney store in Canal Walk is hosting a range of Tangled-themed activities, including storytelling, lantern making, photo opportunities and games.
All the activities are free and run in store every Saturday up to March 12.
