THE town’s two MPs are locking horns – but it won’t be over government policy.
Instead, it is this weekend’s crunch rugby match that will be the topic of debate.
South Swindon MP Robert Buckland and North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson are from either sides of the Anglo-Welsh border and today they will be going head-to-head over the game at Twickenham.
The Tory MPs have said that there has been a lot of banter flying around the office this week ahead of the match, with both men confident they will have the bragging rights in the office on Monday morning.
Robert Buckland, was born in Llanelli, Wales, which is where he watched his rugby growing up, is confident that Wales can come up trumps this afternoon.
He said: “England usually have the upper hand in the office, what with the football, but Wales are starting as favourites for this game.
“I am always nervous when we start favourites as it is added pressure but I am confident Wales can break their Twicken-ham hoodoo.
“I remember 1988 when Wales won the Triple Crown and again in 2008, which I think was the opening game of the tournament and we went on to win the grand slam.
“I am quietly confident we will be able to win but I am just hoping for a good game of rugby.
“The Six Nations is one of the best sporting festivals in the country and really creates a special atmosphere which gets people interested in playing rugby.”
Despite going in to the game as underdogs, after narrow victories away to Scotland and Italy and an inexperienced side, Justin Tomlinson is still confident England can give Wales a run for their money.
He said: “There is a really healthy rivalry in our office, as Rob valiantly is the lone voice for Wales.
“We often get the upper hand in football, but I am wary that Wales are favourites going into this game. I am confident we can cause an upset.”
Today is also a big day for The Wessex Male Choir, who have been selected to entertain the crowds at Twickenham Stadium as part of the pre-match entertainment.
The 60-strong Swindon-based choir, which includes 16 Welshmen, will lead the sold-out crowd in rugby favourites including Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Jerusalem and World In Union as the players head out onto the pitch.
They will also lead the two national anthems before kick-off at 4pm, even singing the Welsh national anthem in the native tongue.
Musical director and Welsh man Rob Elliott said: “This is set to be our biggest gig to date.
“It is a privilege to be invited to sing at this big match and, with a rousing performance from the guys, we look forward to really warming up the crowd before kick-off.”
