SWINDON St George player-coach Carl Baker says that morale remains high as his side go looking for their first win of the season.

The Greenbridge Road-based club entertain Bristol Sonics tomorrow in their third match of the West of England Premier League campaign.

And while results have not gone their way, St George suffered a 70-30 defeat at Cheltenham Old Patesians last weekend, Baker has been pleased with his squad efforts.

“You only have to look at last season,” he said. “I was travelling up from Maidenhead to train three or four players.

“Now I’m coming from London after work and we have got a couple of dozen.

“On Wednesday at training we were working on our attacking game and they were all throwing themselves into it which is great to see.”

Baker doesn’t expect his side to show any affects from that crushing defeat at Everest Road when they tackle the Sonics.

“I was on holiday last week and by all accounts it was a bit of bruiser,” Baker said. “But we are all recovered from that.

“What I have heard about Bristol is that they are a very young side, they are quick and flighty.

“But what we have got is power in a our pack and we will look to break through down the centre of the pitch.

“I don’t think that there are many sides in our division, with the exception of Cheltenham, who can match our power.”

With a fully fit squad to choose from Baker is pleased that the side are no longer just having to rely on the likes of skipper George Cowley.

“Mr Cowley is a bit of a living legend isn’t he,” Baker said. “I just can’t single one player out.

“We have got Danny Shorter and Sam Argent who have been impressive, but the pleasing thing for me is that everyone is pulling together and working hard - as a coach you can’t ask for anything more.

“Tomorrow we can relax and focus on the game, not worry about travelling and stressing on things like that.

“We just want to go out there and put in the best performance that we possibly can.”
