SWINDON Town are looking to buy ‘wildcard’ goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux on a permanent basis from Liverpool during the January transfer window.
The 22-year-old is halfway through a season-long loan at the County Ground and has made 23 appearances for the club.
Town chairman Lee Power has compared the Liverpool stopper to Anfield legend Bruce Grobbelaar for his antics between the sticks and is keen to test the Premier League club’s resolve during the transfer window.
“There has been a change (in management) there and there has been a change here with us, but we really like Lawrence,” Power told a fans' phone-in on BBC Wiltshire about Vigouroux, who is now behind Simon Mignolet, Adam Bogdan, Danny Ward and new signing Kamil Grabara at Anfield.
“He’s a bit of a wildcard and he’s one of those. We discussed that internally, that you could sell Lawrence one day for a fortune.
“He reminds me a little bit of Bruce Grobbelaar and you don’t know what you are going to get with him.
“Sometimes, it might not be great but other times, he takes your breath away with things that he does, but he is someone who we have spoke to Liverpool before about.
“They said they wouldn’t sell, but we’re going to try and have another crack at him in the window.
“We’re trying to crowbar the door open as we speak.”
Meanwhile, Power may be looking to reduce Town's squad further before bringing in any additions.
“It was only two or three weeks ago, when we were talking with Lingy (Martin Ling), that we had 28 or 29 people training, which was way too many,” he added.
“We were looking to thin that out by seven or eight players.
“There will be some fringe players that will leave and if the right one or two come up for areas we are looking to strengthen, we’ll bring them in.
“We haven’t had a fantastic season, which is why we haven’t been inundated with offers. Last season was a different story, hence why we sold who we sold.”
