Swindon Town penalty hero Lawrence Vigouroux says the clean sheet at AFC Wimbledon was a collective effort

Town would have been beaten at Kingsmeadow had it not been for Vigouroux’s save from Lyle Taylor’s penalty just after the half-hour mark - but the man himself says it was a collective effort.

Head coach Luke Williams fielded an unfamiliar four-man defence in south west London, due to spate of injuries at the back and Vigouroux was thrilled with how they fared.

“We always knew it was going to be a tough game. They are a team that likes to get set-pieces and get the ball into the box,” Vigouroux told BBC Wiltshire.

“I think we defended brilliantly. Conor Thomas, playing in an unfamiliar position, was outstanding, and Nathan Thompson, as always, was absolutely brilliant and it makes it easier for me as I know I have got two good individuals in front of me that help.

“Credit to (James) Brophy as well and Darnell (Furlong) too; I think we worked together really well as a unit.”

Had Vigouroux not kept out Taylor’s spot-kick, then the potential loss would have been a controversial one for Town as Tom Elliott admitted after the match that he had stumbled in the box and not been fouled by Conor Thomas, as was deemed by referee John Busby at the time.

Elliott apologised to Thomas immediately after the incident and in the end it was perhaps only fitting that Vigouroux kept out the resulting penalty.

“You have to respect the referee’s decision. I think it was not a poor decision but just something in the heat of the moment he has only got a split second to make,” said Vigouroux.

“At the end of the day, it is what it is and we were good to come away from (Wimbledon) with a point.

“I have been unlucky this season because I have gone the right way for most penalties and got hands and fingers on them but they haven’t been kept out but (yesterday) I made a little change, I changed the way I stand in the goal, and it came off.

“I got the rub of the green and we have come away from a tough place with a point.”
