KELLY Morgan has been given the go-ahead to fight for the WBC world super-middleweight crown – with or without reigning champion Nikki Adler.
Swindon’s WBC Silver middleweight champion Morgan was mandated to face Adler by the governing body a fortnight ago, however, the super-middleweight queen announced last week that her next fight would be for the Global Boxing Union and WIBF titles in March.
That left 2002 Commonwealth Games javelin bronze medallist Morgan in limbo and her manager, Richard Farnan, has been in constant contact with the WBC Female chairman Malte Muller and he has revealed that Morgan, who has secured sponsorship from the Hills Group, can fight for ‘vacant title’.
“I have had a message from Malte to say that Kelly can fight for the vacant title,” trainer Farnan told the Advertiser.
“I don’t know if Nikki has vacated or whether she has been stripped. It could be for the interim title, but we have been given the go-ahead and a suggested opponent.”
The name the WBC have given to Farnan, who also trains Morgan, is Belgium’s Femke Hermans, who has won all four of her fights to date.
In her last two bouts, the 27-year-old has won the Belgian super-middleweight title, stopping Elene Sikmashvili in two rounds, before then being taken the eight-round distance by Bulgaria’s Borislava Goranova to win the vacant World Boxing Federation international title in January.
Farnan added: “We have been in contact with her manager and they said they would be happy to do it in the summer.
"However, we are looking at April, so I have been back in contact with Malte to see if there are any other names they would be happy for Kelly to fight.”
Meanwhile, Farnan also revealed that he has started discussions with promoters Poxon Sports about putting on Morgan’s world title fight.
The promoters have a television deal with ITV and staged Chris Eubank Jr’s IBO world super-middleweight title fight live on ITV Box Office.
Farnan said: "At the moment, we are just in initial discussions with them."
