SWINDON Town manager David Flitcroft says he has held “positive conversations” with goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux about staying at the club and is itching to get his new group of players together for the first time next week.
Vigouroux is the prized asset in Town’s currently threadbare squad, with the 23-year-old enjoying a stunning season between the sticks despite the team’s relegation from League One.
The former Liverpool player remains under contract at Swindon until 2019 but is understood to have caught the eye of several higher league club’s during the previous campaign.
Last month, Swindon chairman Lee Power stated that although the club would have to listen to a ‘silly offer’ for Vigouroux, his departure from the County Ground is far from a certainty.
Flitcroft has managed to touch base with Vigouroux following his appointment as Town boss on June 5 and is upbeat about the nature of those discussions ahead of the start of the squad’s pre-season training schedule next week.
“I have had positive conversations with Lawrence,” said Flitcroft.
“He is spending that family time at the moment but he has been on an out-of-season programme.
“I spoke to him before he went on holiday and while he was on holiday. We had a fantastic conversation and I can’t wait for the squad to get back and to work with Lawrence.
“I love working with quality. Out of possession is important and there is a beauty in that but I love quality and I love to be entertained.
“I can’t wait to work with the group of players that are currently contracted at the club.”
With Flitcroft’s appointment coming in the middle of the off-season, the new manager has primarily had to make do with telephone conversations when liaising with the members of his squad.
Although he has told his troops to make the most of the time they have with their families, he has warned them to expect plenty of hard graft once their summer programme begins.
“I have spoken to most of them. It’s been difficult at times to contact them because they are having that family time and I understand that and appreciate that,” added Flitcroft.
“The ones I have spoken to, I have said, ‘Make sure you enjoy it because when you do come back, we are in to work, we are in to graft and commit’ and they are fully aware of that.”
