SWINDON’S win at Windsor was for Adam Westall says head coach Sean Lynn, with the club skipper handing over the armband next season.
The visitors edged a close game 32-29 away to Windsor to lift them above their hosts and secure a top seven finish for Lynn’s side.
Westall, who has been with the club for the past six years as well as representing the county team, will continue to play for the South West One East outfit but Michael Thompson will take over as the new club captain from next season.
“It was a nice way to sign off the season, especially as Adam Westall is now stepping down as captain,” said Lynn.
“Mike Thompson is going to be taking the reins of that next year.
“I think a lot of the performance and the way we did it was something special for the club and for Adam for the effort he has put in during the last six years.
“Adam has been huge and he is still going to be playing for the club which is great for us and the players around him.
“Mike will bring a lot of leadership on the field and he has shown a lot of maturity since I have been at the club for three years now.
“He is a very good voice on the pitch and he will lead by example in training with intensity and physicality and then he will do that also on a Saturday.”
Swindon, who are used to battling it out in the top four of the division, have had a disappointing campaign by their high standards.
But Lynn has put that down to a change in personnel and is looking forward to what looks to be a competitive league next season.
“I would describe the season as a rebuilding project,” he added.
“We have had a lot of new faces and I think the addition of John Mason, who is a second row from the RAF who has played in the last four or five games, has brought us that leadership in the forwards that we needed.
“I am looking forward to next season because as a local Swindon player I don’t think there is anything better than playing in the league that we are going to be in next year.
“You have got the likes of Chippenham, maybe Salisbury and Royal Wootton Bassett so there are a lot of local derbies in there.
“It is a nice one to play in if you are looking to aspire to be in the Dorset and Wilts county team.”
