DAVID Bellego reckons his delight at signing for one of his ‘favourite clubs in England’ shouldn’t be understated after he joined the Swindon Robins for next season.
The 23-year-old Frenchman, who rode for Redcar Bears in the Premier League last term, has become the third member of Alun Rossiter’s 2017 Robins line-up, joining Australian ace Jason Doyle and British starlet Adam Ellis.
Bellego, who finished third in last season’s Premier League Riders Championship, won the Premier League with Glasgow Tigers in 2011 and also spent three years with Berwick Bandits but his ambition for 2017 centred on earning a spot with a team at British speedway’s top table.
The former French speedway champion has previously guested for Swindon – twice in 2013 and once in 2014 – and has also ridden against Rossiter’s men but is now champing at the bit to step up to SGP Premiership and spread his wings as a fully-fledged Robin.
“I’m really proud,” Bellego told the Advertiser.
“It’s something that I’ve been working really hard for and it’s great for me to get a chance, and I’m really happy for it.
“It’s been a bit of a dream since I was young. For any rider, they want to ride at the top level and for a club like Swindon.
“They’re one of my favourite clubs in the top league in England and it’s great to be riding for someone like Rosco – he’s a really nice guy.
“I’ve been a guest for Swindon before and Rosco; he was pushing me and saying that I have good potential.
“Last year, I rode for Redcar and I ended up as the number one.
“I’m really looking forward to it and I’m working really hard physically in the winter so I’m fit and ready for next season.
“I’ve also been working with Brian Karger, who’s a really good tuner, and he’s really helped me improve my engine.”
Bellego has also signed for KSM Krosno, who ply their trade in the Polish First League – one below the prestigious Ekstraliga – and Danish outfit Grinstead. The new Robin added: “It’s going to be busy but that’s what I want. I want to be riding as much as I can.
“I’m just over the moon. I’m so happy to be a Robin for 2017 and I’m looking forward to proving what I can do.”
