SWINDON Town interim chairman Jeremy Wray has urged striker Leon Clarke to let his football do the talking and prove himself a hit at Chesterfield, with the striker expected to complete a loan switch to the League One side tomorrow.

The former QPR player was told by Town boss Paolo Di Canio he will not play for the Robins for as long as he is manager following the very public altercation between the two shortly after the Carling Cup defeat by Southampton last week.

With Clarke tied down to a two-year deal – which he only signed on August 19 – it was always unlikely Town would be able push through a permanent move away from the County Ground before last week’s transfer deadline, making a loan move the most likely option.

At least four clubs were interested in Clarke, but tomorrow he is expected to head north to make a temporary switch to John Sheridan’s Spireites.

He will be there for 93 days – the maximum length of time allowed during the emergency loan window.

Wray said Clarke leaves with his best wishes and hopes he can move on from a difficult time for both the player and the club by proving a success at Chesterfield.

He said: “We have to remember that he is still a Swindon player and I wish him well. It was obviously a well-publicised difference of opinion with the manager but the best thing Leon can do is let his football do his talking.

“I haven’t lost faith he can score at this level and above.”

It is unclear how much of Clarke’s wages Chesterfield will pick up, while Swindon decided against disciplining the striker for his part in the Di Canio spat.

Chesterfield will be hoping that Clarke can resolve the club’s goalscoring woes, with the club having managed to hit the back of the net just four times in six games.

The pressure is on Sheridan to turn things around at the club, who are sat second bottom of League One without a win so far this season.

"Everyone knows I want to win every game,” said Sheridan recently.

“I want to do well with this club, I believe I'll do well with them and I'll carry on doing what I think is right.”
