ELLIOT Benyon insists he is not the ‘next Charlie Austin’ but the deadline day signing has every intention of replacing the former Town favourite in the hearts of Swindon’s fans.

The 23-year-old completed his switch from Torquay just ahead of yesterday’s 11pm shut-off point and now carries the burden of providing the goals at the County Ground following the departure of top scorer Austin.

Benyon, who was formally unveiled at SN1 this afternoon but did not sign in time to take his place in the side against Bournemouth tonight, is well aware of the boots he’s ultimately expected to fill.

“Charlie Austin was a brilliant player here but I’m just coming here to do my best and do my own thing,” he said.

“I’m not saying by any means that I’m going to be the next Charlie Austin, but I definitely want to be Swindon Town’s next big goalscorer.

“I’ve scored a few goals in League Two, and I’m hopeful I can come here and do the same thing.

“I always set myself goal targets at the start of the season, so hopefully I’ll be able to keep to those, but I’m just looking to get settled in the team, settled in the area and move forward now.”

Benyon had scored 14 goals for Torquay this season prior to his move but the former Bristol City trainee jumped at the chance to step up a division and rejoin his former Ashton Gate boss Danny Wilson.

“It wasn’t difficult to leave because once a big club like Swindon came in and made an offer for me I was over the moon and I couldn’t wait to get here,” said Benyon, who will wear the number 24 shirt.

“Danny Wilson was the manager at Bristol City for a few months while I was doing my apprenticeship.

“I remember him being a good, strong manager and I know that he likes his teams to pass the ball which I’m looking forward to getting involved in.

“The gaffer said to me this morning that if we can string a few wins together then we’ll be right up around the play-offs again, and that sort of attitude suits me down to the ground.

“Swindon’s a massive club and it’s going places and as soon as I heard they were interested there was only place I wanted to come.

“(The move) came about pretty quickly actually, it was sorted late last night and it was finished just in time which is great.

“The later it got on the transfer deadline it looked a bit more like I was going to be staying at Torquay, but it all happened towards the end of the day and I’m delighted it did.”
