The origin of a roof that temporarily blocked a major road in Swindon after it flew off in high winds has been revealed.
Many people suspected it had come from the newly-opened Home Bargains store, which was right by where the roof landed.
But a spokesperson for Home Bargains has informed the Adver that they believe the roof did not come from their shop during high winds on Monday afternoon.
Instead it seems to have come from a substation in the shop’s car park, which is managed by SSE.
The spokesperson said: “As far as we are aware the roof came off a substation in the car park and it was not in fact from our store.
“SSE engineers have inspected and are managing this issue.”
The road is now open to traffic, having been cleared by a JCB digger borrowed from Swindon Borough Council.
The digger ‘folded up’ the roofing, with the road cleared around at 3.47pm.
Wiltshire Police said: “Our thanks to Swindon Borough Council for the loan of a JCB which ‘folded up’ the large piece of roof which landed on the carriageway.”
This follows the Met Office issuing an urgent weather warning that Swindon and Wiltshire are set to be buffeted by strong winds.
It says that a yellow weather warning for wind is now in place from 6.25am on Monday morning through to 10pm on Monday evening.
