Shocking CCTV footage shows a man being knocked to the ground by a punch to the head outside a takeaway in Old Town.

This comes after police issued an appeal for witnesses and information which included images of two people they would like to speak to in connection with the High Street assault, which happened at around 7pm on Friday.

A three-minute clip obtained by the Adver shows the victim leaving the Old Town Kebab House  with a bag of food, kicking a bike leaning outside it, and then being swiftly followed out by two people who are thought to be older teenagers or in their early 20s.

The 50-year-old puts his arm out in an attempt to halt their approach before one of the two punches him once in the face.

After he falls to the ground and lies still, possibly unconscious, the pair walk back inside and a pedestrian crosses the High Street to help him.

The good Samaritan pushes the victim onto his side and appears to call 999 while other passers by crowd around the injured man.

The two suspects walk out of the kebab house, pick up their bikes, pause to observe and gesture towards the victim as the small crowd disperses, then cycle away towards Marlborough Road as the 999 call continues.

Lastly, other people come out of the kebab shop with blue kitchen roll for the victim's head as more pedestrians wander over to help.

Officers closed part of High Street near the junction with Wood Street for several hours from around 7pm on Friday.

The road reopened after a police cordon set up to guard forensic teams investigating the area lifted around 11.15pm the same evening.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Great Western Hospital for treatment before being discharged by Sunday evening.
