A burning Asda van caused a major A-road to be completely closed to traffic this morning.

The blaze at around 7.30am on Monday (April 29) happened on the A417 in Gloucestershire and saw ‘100 per cent’ of the van damaged and the whole driver's cab being engulfed in flames.

Eyewitnesses reported that the road near the Air Balloon Roundabout was burned and the green vehicle was blackened.

An eyewitness said: "It was totally gutted by fire.

"The bit behind the driver was completely ripped up. There was a massive tear on the van.

"The road surface was all burned.”

Swindon Advertiser:

Gloucestershire Fire Service confirmed the scale of the damage.

It said in a statement: “The van was 100 per cent damaged by fire and there were no injuries.

"We were called at 7.53am to reports of a van on fire on the A417.

"Two fire engines were sent from Gloucester North and Cheltenham East, to deal with a delivery van which was on fire.

The eyewitness said: “It's a nightmare. I've sat in some traffic here, but this is absolutely the worst I've known.

“I've gone about half a mile in 30 minutes.”

Both directions of the A417 were closed at one point, but traffic conditions have now returned to normal.

An Asda spokesperson said: “I can confirm that we are aware of this incident and thankfully, nobody was injured.”
