A man has been charged with three offences following a crash which flattened a bus stop and sparked an emergency response.

The incident took place at around 4pm on Sunday, May 12, on Dunwich Drive in Toothill, and left one bus stop completely destroyed while a BMW ended up on its roof.

The driver of the BMW was able to escape the wreckage and ran from the scene, which sparked a police manhunt in the area.

Eye-witnesses described seeing 'frightening' firearms officers and drones searching the area, and one local told the Adver the bus stop pole as going straight through the car.

"The roof wasn't crumpled. A very lucky person," he said.

Jacob Wyness, of Markenfield, Toothill has now been charged with driving without due care and attention, failing to stop after a road traffic collision and driving without an MOT or insurance.

The 23-year-old has been released on bail and is due to appear at Swindon Magistrates Court on May 29.
