THE Bespoke Guardians Swindon Wildcats have announced Sam Godfrey has signed a new one-year contract with the club.
Defenceman Godfrey arrived in Wiltshire in 2017 and has collected four trophies under Aaron Nell - most notably, the Autumn Cup and National Cup double in 2018.
Having come through the junior ranks in Swindon, Godfrey moved to Canada in 2009 to join the Ontario Hockey Academy before returning to the United Kingdom with the Slough Jets in 2011.
After two years with them, and then one with the Wildcats, the 29-year-old moved to Guildford where he spent three seasons in the then EPL, securing the cup and play-off double in 2016.
Since returning to the Wildcats, Godfrey has helped the team claim more silverware, and the Wildcats say he "will be looking to extend this number in the forthcoming season."
In a statement announcing the news, head coach Aaron Nell said: "I’m pleased to have Godders back on the team for another year.
"He’s a physical defenceman who takes pride in the defensive side of the game. As a D core, we tried to change how we played a little last year and I think this benefitted Godders by adding a little more offense to his game.
"He’s been around the game a long time now, but he’s still only just 29 and will continue to grow for another year."
Meanwhile, Godfrey said: "I’m really happy to be back in Swindon for another year. Aaron is building a really competitive roster and it’s exciting to be a part of that.
"We know last year we underachieved at times and the focus for this year is to improve our consistency night after night.
"I’m looking forward to getting back in the locker room with the boys and being back on the ice in front of the fans."
