Swindon Town’s hopes of extending their unbeaten run were sunk in the last minute as they lost 2-1 at Walsall.

Mo Faal headed home from an early corner before Paul Glatzel slammed home an equaliser in the second half, but with time running out Danny Johnson netted the winner for the playoff chasers.

So, how did the players fare as individuals at the Poundland Bescot Stadium?

GK: Jack Bycroft – 5

This is two games in a row that Bycroft has been unable to deal with a corner put under the posts and that could be a concern when nobody else is dealing with those situations either. His kicking was good in this game and it set up a few good positions and overall he dealt with what Walsall had to offer.

RCB: Conor McCarthy – 6

He looked more comfortable after switching into the middle, but overall was fine on the right, although it does limit Town in possession. After returning to the centre he was a useful calming presence for Harley Hunt and Walsall were having less joy on the counter.

CB: Tom Brewitt – 4

This was another difficult night for Brewitt as he struggled to cope with the daddy longlegs that is Faal. He was being dragged out of position and that was creating room for the hosts to attack. His injury is thought to be hamstring one, so this might be the last we see of him.

LCB: Frazer Blake-Tracy – 6

Losing Udoka Godwin-Malife was always going to be tough, but they killed the man and not the idea. When Blake-Tracy did make a run forward it set up the goal and when he started to do it more often as the game went on, it helped to push Walsall backwards and help Swindon retain the ball.

RWB: Joel McGregor – 7

Not a bad debut at all. He was defensively very solid, I can only remember one instance that Liam Gordon was able to get beyond him. He used the ball well, was rarely dispossessed, and took up some good positions as well. He certainly did not look out of place.

CM: Jake Cain – 6

Cain did well again at moving the ball quickly and again was probably Swindon’s best attacking threat in the first half. He and Glatzel have a good understanding and it was nice to watch their interplay. He faded a little bit in the second half, but overall he did well.

CDM: Nnamdi Ofoborh – 6

His play with the ball is very hit and miss, he will do a lovely Cruyff turn and then misplace a simple pass. But still without the ball is very important. Having someone who is happy to sit in front of the defence and crunch into tackles is helping to sustain periods of possession in a way no one else on this team can do.

CM: Dawson Devoy – 5

Once or twice he made one of his runs beyond the strikers and that opened things up a little bit but it didn’t happen often enough. With the ball, he was quite safe and failed to make a big impact.

LWB: Williams Kokolo – 5

Aside from two dangerous runs in behind that ended up coming to nothing, this was a bit of a come-down performance for Kokolo. He struggled with runs from midfielders behind him in a largely sloppy performance.

ST: Paul Glatzel – 7

As mentioned, his link-up with Cain was good to watch for much of the match, there is an obvious understanding there. He was tireless generally all night and then was rewarded with a wonderful strike that should have been enough for at least a point.

ST: Aaron Drinan – 6

Up against some very physical defenders, he gave his own and was able to run them into the channels well a few times. He offers more than just a poacher's instinct as he runs hard for the team, which makes him useful even if he doesn’t get a chance.

Substitutes:

Harley Hunt – 5

There were a few of the obvious nerves you would expect from a 16-year-old when making their debut early on, but he played his way through them. He grew into things and gave the promise of what he could become in the future.

Rushian Hepburn-Murphy – 7

He made a real impact when he came on as Walsall were pushing forwards and that opened up space for him in behind. You can’t underestimate his role in the goal and then he could well have had one himself if only he had realised Owen Evans was off his line a split-second earlier.

Charlie Austin – 5

Again he came on and proved to be a presence. If nothing else, I liked that his ability to drop in and play allowed Glatzel and Hepburn-Murphy to play on the shoulder and pose questions of Walsall in behind.

George McEachran – 6

Now that Swindon are back to playing possession football, he is really coming into his own. He came on and started to dictate the play from deep and keep the ball moving at pace in Swindon’s best period of the match. I have completely flipped on him from a few weeks ago and think he has played his way into another contract.
