Peep Show star David Mitchell has revealed he would be up for returning, as the curtain falls on the show’s final series.

The funnyman, who has played socially awkward loan manager Mark Corrigan in the comedy, said he would reprise the role for a “different programme”.

“In my head, if we did that it would be a different programme. We would all love to do that at some point,” he said.

The show’s creator and writer Jesse Armstrong added: “I don’t know about a special as I think what we have is a really good format for a sitcom, but I could imagine coming to Dave and Robert in 10 years with a different show and saying, ‘What do you think might have happened to them? Let’s see if anyone will put it on TV’. I would really quite love to do that.”

Peep Show, which made its debut on screens in 2003, follows Croydon flatmates Mark and Jeremy “Jez” Usbourne – played by Robert Webb. It has become Channel 4′s longest-running comedy.

Robert explained why they had to bow out: “The premise is changing. It was a show about two young men sharing a flat and it’s become two middle-aged men sharing a flat, which is a different level of sadness. I think it was getting too sad.”

While the ninth and final series of Peep Show returns to Channel 4, with many of the cast back for a “term”, fans should not expect a sentimental finale.

David said: “Once an episode is not doing what a sitcom should, then you’re letting it down.

“There’s a long-running sense of narrative. If you watched the final episode of the last series as your first episode of Peep Show it would work, but the fact this is the end makes sense too.”

His co-star Robert, said: “I think there’s an acknowledgement it’s the last series.”

David admitted it was “sad” as the shoot came to an end.

“It was sad. We had a lovely last shoot and it was just as good a series as any of them really,” he said.

“You can’t do it without looking at the other shows. I certainly couldn’t do it without looking back and seeing how the characters have changed and evolved since 2002 when we were shooting the first series, which means we start taking a funny, nostalgic look at our existence.”

Peep Show series nine begins on November 11 at 10pm on Channel 4.
