A BURMESE democracy activist will be giving a talk in Swindon tomorrow night.

Zoya Phan, author of ‘Little Daughter: A memoir of survival in Burma and the West’, will be at the Friends’ Meeting House, in Eastcott Hill, from 7.30pm.

Zoya grew up in a village in the heart of the jungles of Burma.

She was unaware of the impact of the military junta on the country or her parents’ political work.

At the age of 14, her village was attacked by the Burmese army and her family had to flee for their lives.

Zoya will talk about her life and the current political system in Burma.

“There have been some positive changes taking place in central parts of Burma, which is very hopeful and encouraging,” she said.

“However, there are still hundreds of prisoners of conscience and political prisoners in jails, and attacks against ethnic civilians continue.

“The people in Burma still need international support. Come along to the meeting to learn more, and find out how you can help to make a difference.”
