SWINDON will be back on Radio 1’s airwaves next month when DJ Nick Grimshaw visits the town as part of his Breakfast Show tour.
The DJ and special guests are coming to Swindon on May 8 as part of a four-date tour of previous Big Weekend host towns and cities, in the run up to this year’s event in Derry.
The exact location the team will be visiting has not yet been revealed, but organisers have confirmed he will be broadcasting from a school in front of an invited audience.
Speaking about the tour, Manchester-born Nick said: “I can’t wait to go wild on tour with some of my favourite pop stars and it’ll be great to meet the good listeners of Radio 1.”
During the tour, the 28-year-old will be joined by special guests for live performances and chats, with last year’s X Factor semi-finalists Union J set to perform at the first date in Bangor, Wales.
Other guests set to make an appearance during the tour will be announced on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show in the coming weeks.
Swindon hosted Radio 1’s Big Weekend in 2009, with Lily Allen, Snow Patrol and Kasabian headlining the event at a sunny Lydiard Park on May 9 and 10.
Radio 1 DJs heaped praise on Swindon as a result of the event’s success, saying it had a special atmosphere compared with other years.
Speaking at the time, DJ Scott Mills said: “There’s a really good vibe about the place. Last year was good in Maidstone but it was super hot, almost too hot for a festival.
“This year it’s just right actually – quite sunny and the crowd are really nice.
“Swindon is one of these places where it’s not far from Bristol, not far from London, but to get everything in one place for free in an event like this people are happy to be here.
“The chances of getting a ticket are quite slim, so the people who are here are really up for it and made a whole weekend of it.
“Thank you to everyone in Swindon for being so lovely and welcoming Radio 1 so nicely with open arms.”
As the news was unveiled on yesterday’s show, Nick – known as Grimmy – received several text messages from listeners about Swindon, including one which warned him about the high number of roundabouts situated in the town.
This year’s Big Weekend show will take place in Derry, Northern Ireland, which coincides with it being chosen as the City of Culture for 2013 .
As part of the tour, the team will also be visiting Bangor, North Wales on April 29 and Maidstone in Kent on May 2.
The final show in the tour will come from Radio 1’s Academy in Derry, which is opening its doors from May 11 to 17 to offer a range of inspirational workshops and sessions to local young people.
