Matt Whittaker, manager of Pets At Home Swindon, writes about keeping fit
With 2014 now upon us, many people will be keen to get fitter and burn off all those extra Christmas calories.
And if you have a dog, then it’s the perfect excuse to get outdoors and enjoy some walks together, improving your health and fitness at the same time.
Getting fit with your pet can bring huge physical and mental rewards.
Recent American research has shown that walking 20 minutes a day with your dog, five days a week, can lead to owners shedding at least 14lbs a year.
And not only is dog walking great exercise, but it can be really sociable and a good way to meet people – therefore improving your mental health too.
Your dog also will hugely benefit from the increased level of exercise, and if you’re finding it hard to motivate yourself, take satisfaction in knowing that helping your dog get in great shape will help you get fitter too.
Even varying your walks and activities with your dog will help keep you motivated during the long winter months.
They’ll love doing something fun such as playing tug of war in the local park, or exploring some nearby countryside.
Why not pop into one of our stores and treat your dog to some special toys to keep them active outside? Of course, make sure you base any exercise on your dog’s breed, age and health – if you’re not sure how much exercise your dog needs, consult your vet first.
And always walk somewhere you are completely safe. Stay away from secuded areas, especially after dark.
Happy New Year!
