SWINDON...

1947: An ornate silver chalice made from melted-down silver from family heirlooms, and hand-wrought into the chalice, was a gift to Bristol Cathedral. It was given by Mrs Robeson, wife of Rev H E Robeson, former Rev of the parish of Farm PIece, Blunsdon in memory of her parents Canon and Mrs James George Tetley.

1957: Brian F Hamley of Southampton Street, Swindon, caught a 8lb 4oz bronze bream in Queen’s Park, Swindon. Using a roach rod with a line of 5lb breaking strain he took nearly 20 minutes to land the bream, which was believed to be the biggest taken in any waters around Swindon for many years.

1977: The Swindon Motel on the edge of the new Stratton St Margaret Bypass was reported to have been sold for around £400,000. But Crest Hotels International, a subsidiary of brewing giants Bass Charrington, who have been negotiating would not comment.

2013: More than 70 jobs were due to be created in Swindon with the opening of a new Marks & Spencer Simply Food store at Mannington Retail Park. The park had expanded rapidly since it was partly demolished in 2010.
