SWINDON...

1947: Two cases of suspected infantile paralysis were reported in the Swindon area. Information was first received of a 13-month-old baby, brought on holiday to Swindon, from Leicester, where it is probable that the baby was infected. A further case was reported from the Stratton area, a child in this case being seven years of age, and since removed to the Chippenham Isolation Hospital.

1957: Considerable enthusiasm has been aroused by the announcement that a room in Jefferies House at Coate is about to be converted into a museum in memory of writer Richard Jefferies who was born there in 1848.

1977: The Army Redcaps will be the main attraction at the Wootton Bassett Show at Lydiard Park. The organisers, The Young Farmers Show Committee, felt the new venue would prove excellent.

2013: A firefighter who accidentally burned down his own business made more than 350 skydives in support of the charity that helped him get back on his feet. Pete Price, crew manager at Cricklade Fire Station, saw his garage business Prestige Repairs burn to the ground five years ago after he was sent to a fire in Swindon. He was supported along the way by the Firefighters’ Charity.
