WOMEN inspired by the England team’s World Cup displays learnt some new skills at an open day held by Supermarine Rugby Club.

Dozens of women of all ages attended the event at the South Marston base yesterday. The event included a full day of activities with participants being taught the rules of the game and taking part in basic training drills.

It is hoped that the number of women playing rugby in the area will increase after a welcome boost from the England’s team great progress in the women’s World Cup in France. England faced Canada in the final, in Paris, last night.

Jamie Barrett, from Supermarine Rugby Club, said: “As the premier ladies team in the area this is a great opportunity for us to get out in the community and encourage more women to take up rugby.

“Primarily, the event is for anyone who isn’t already playing to come and give it a go.”

The open day was organised in partnership with Dorset and Wiltshire Rugby Football Union.

Claire Legg, from the union, said: “Given the size of Dorset and Wiltshire it is nice to get out and do something like this, seeing local people engaging with rugby. We hope that the England team’s great form will encourage more people to get involved.”

Once the women had finished on the pitch there was a barbecue and the club screened the World Cup Final at their bar.
