A HOME intruder was scared away from the scene of a burglary in the early hours of Saturday in Chiseldon – but not before making off with cash that had been left in the home.

Shortly after 2am, while neighbours slept, the home on Turnball Close was broken into and an intruder searched the property.

An amount of cash being kept at the address was stolen.

At about 3.20am a man was disturbed in the property and seen making his escape.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident and would like to trace a man to speak to in connection with their enquiries.

The man was of medium height but large build, and was dressed in predominantly dark clothing, including what is thought to have been a black leather jacket or top.

The burglary is being investigated by the Swindon Priority Crime Team at Gablecross, who are asking for anyone in the area at the time or who may know of anyone matching the description to contact them.

Acting Detective Sergeant Gemma Vinton, of the team, is investigating the burglary.

“Wiltshire Police are appealing for witnesses to a burglary at a residential premises on Turnball Close in Chiseldon between 2.30am and 3.20am,” said Det Sgt Vinton.

“A male was disturbed at the premises who police would like to speak to in their enquiries.

“He is described as a man at least 5ft 10in tall, of big build and wearing dark clothing, possibly with a dark leather or similar top on. Cash was stolen during the burglary.

“Anyone with any information in relation to this incident or the man in question should contact Acting Detective Sergeant Gemma Vinton for the Swindon Priority Crime Team at Gablecross Police Station on non-emergency number 101, or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Standard crime prevention advice has been issued by Wiltshire Police following an increase in burglaries over the summer.

A spokesman said: “Remember to remove keys from locked windows and to keep them out of sight in a safe place, but ensure you have a fire escape route planned.

“Lights on in the house need to give the impression that someone is in, so leaving only a hall or landing light on is not good enough. Usually a living room and a bedroom light on timer switch will give a good impression of occupancy.

“Curtains need to be closed so that lights coming on do not make it easier to see what is available to steal.

“Never leave a garage or garden shed unlocked, especially if it has a connecting door to the house “A thief could get in and work on the inner door in privacy.

“Fit shed and garage doors with a strong padlock and make sure that they are solid enough not to be kicked in.”
