IT WAS a weekend of fun for the family as several pubs across the town held special events to raise money for charity.
The Duke of Edinburgh pub in Cricklade Road united the community in their attempt to follow in the footsteps of social media phenomenon Stephen Sutton and raise money for the Teenage Cancer Charity.
With a bouncy castle, face painting and handmade jewellery, the event on Saturday was for the kids, with a follow-up event at the Chalet on Sunday with live music for the adults.
Landlord Mark Thompson got a rough deal, nominated twice by his locals for the ice bucket challenge during the fun day.
“Two people nominated me, ex friends of mine,” he said.
“The fact they are raising money for the teenage cancer charity is fantastic, because it is something Stephen started but couldn’t follow through. We did a similar day last year for the Air Ambulance, and we want this to be a pub for the community. We have got homes all around us, and hopefully events like this will help bring the Gorse Hill community together.”
Event organiser Bob Johnson, said Stephen’s efforts had inspired him to host the event.
“Everyone has all given up their time for free to get involved which is brilliant,” he said.
“All the presents and prizes have been donated by individuals and businesses.
“One thing we really do well in this country is raise money for charities, and this year we wanted to do it in memory of Stephen Sutton. We have tried to keep costs down and all the money will go to that cause.
“This is the Gorse Hill community doing our bit, and while it might just be a drop in the ocean it brings people together.”
The New Inn in Stratton also held an event to raise money for the Prospect Hospice.
Bands played throughout the day while the car park was also full of fun games for the children including a bouncy castle.
It was organised by Danni Moreton and Hannah Soutar, both of whom had parents who died from cancer and used the hospice Hannah said: “Prospect is an amazing local charity that does such good work. I think everyone in Swindon knows someone who has used it.
“This is a family event that we are using to raise money. There is a raffle and an auction and all the stalls will be giving a donation.”
