WHEN schoolteacher Luke Wareham started tutoring a friend’s brother, he never imagined he’d be struggling to meet demand for his skills three years later.
But after another record summer of GCSE results for tutees from the Swindon Tuition Centre, Luke is now recruiting more tutors to give struggling students the chance they need.
“I started tutoring the brother of a friend and it sort of went from there really,” said Luke, who was trained as a primary school teacher and worked at St Luke’s School in Penhill as a faculty leader.
“He was really struggling and he had dyslexia, which meant he was finding it difficult in school.
“Back then I would just ride my push bike over to his house to tutor him and then I’d cycle back.”
Soon, he started to see an improvement in his student’s results.
“It really boosted his confidence,” he said. “I saw his confidence grow and he started doing well in subjects that he had really struggled with. That was really good to see.”
Luke started renting an office at Kembrey Park where he took on new tutees. As his reputation grew, so did the business and the number of tutors involved.
“We’re now a tuition company which teaches four-year-olds to 19-year-olds in English, maths and science up to GCSE level,” he said.
“During the day we teach the most challenging pupils in Swindon; those with behavioural, social and emotional difficulties.
“In the evening we offer private tuition to those who are struggling at school or want to get to a particular level or grade or want to excel in a particular subject.
“We teach in a two-to-one ratio, and all the tutees have a bespoke programme so everything is catered down to their individual needs.
“It’s really about boosting their confidence and understanding what their needs are.”
This year the centre, now based in Gorse Hill, achieved its best GCSE results to date, with 95 per cent of tutees achieving grades A to C.
Luke said: “There is so much demand we’re now looking for new tutors, especially ones who can teach English and maths.”
