THE consultation over controversial options for the future of Wiltshire’s fire service - including a possible merger with the Dorset service - will continue for another six weeks.
Between now and 20 October, people are being urged to have their say on a range of options for the future of the service, including closer working with local authorities and the police, through to a possible merger with Dorset Fire Authority.
A parallel consultation is being held in Dorset during the same time period and, in both counties, residents can go on-line to access further information and complete a questionnaire.
In addition, 12,000 households across Wiltshire and Dorset have been randomly selected to receive the questionnaire directly. Information has also been placed in public buildings and libraries, and consultation forums are being held with the public, businesses and voluntary organisations.
Simon Routh-Jones, Chief Fire Officer of Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service, said the views of residents would be taken into account.
“We deliver essential, life changing and lifesaving services,” he said.
“While we face a challenging financial future, we are keen to encourage people to contribute to our consultation. We want to ensure that we explore every possibility to transform our Service, but also help to protect our essential frontline activities.
“We have a number of potential options, and it is vital that we know what local people think.”
Cllr Chris Devine, chairman of the Wiltshire and Swindon Combined Fire Authority, said the financial situation surrounding the service was key.
"We have a wonderful fire and rescue service in Wiltshire and Swindon, and the Combined Fire Authority is determined to maintain the excellent professionalism and high standards which our staff set and deliver for all residents in our communities,” he said.
“We would like your views on how the authority should continue to strengthen its prevention and protection activities while, at the same time, coping with significantly reduced grants from central government.”
