The Saracen’s Head Hotel High Street Highworth SN6 7AG Tel: 01793 762284 Website: www.saracenshead.co.uk
WHAT’S IT LIKE?
The Saracen’s Head was in use as an inn of some kind in 1825 and is probably much older. Just how old has sadly not been recorded, but it has been suggested that it was once part of the local manor and stands on the site of an old monastery. It is also believed there is a tunnel (now bricked up) leading from the cellar, under Market Square, and towards St Michael’s Church.
Arkell’s has owned the pub since 1883 and The Saracen’s Head that we see today is the result of renovations in 1966 and 2012.
An oak-panelled lounge bar with a roaring fire and cosy sofa is often enough to convince visitors to make an evening of it.
WHO GOES THERE?
With two bars, a cosy restaurant — serving a range of dishes including vegetarian options and a dedicated children’s menu — and regular theme nights, the Saracen’s Head offers something for everyone.
The hotel also has 12 en-suite bedrooms.
PRICES 3B £3, Carling £3.50, Stowford Press £3.40. A small glass of house wine is £2.60, a medium glass is £3.15 and a large glass £4.
