PRIMARY school pupils enjoyed all the fun of the fair at their annual May Day event, with proceeds going towards new playground equipment for the children.

The annual May Day fair, held at the Friends of Wroughton Infant School in Wharf Road on May 8, attracted more than 70 visitors who came to have a day in the sun for a worthy cause.

Wroughton Infants, which caters for 200 pupils from reception to year two, hoped to raise £1,000 for a much-needed revamp of their school playground area, Karon Brown, community tutor, said while they are awaiting a final count of funds raised, the school was overwhelmed by the support they were given on the day.

She said: “The children have been looking forward to the fayre and their parents certainly enjoyed themselves. It was absolutely brilliant to see everyone in the hall enjoying themselves. It was compact but there was a great atmosphere.”

The fair included a tombola for the adults with wine hampers up for grabs, a raffle, and face painting for the children.

Karon said new playground equipment will improve the children’s school life.

“The equipment we have is looking very tired and it’s in need of a refresh. We’ve already installed some reading huts in the playground but now our main focus is a slide with steps which we’re trying to raise £11,000 for in the near future.

“Having play equipment helps the children learn and it’s nice for them to have fresh equipment to play on with their friends,” she said.

The Friends of Wroughton Infant school will hold its next fundraising event, a summer ball, on June 27 which they hope will raise £2,000.
