PLANS are well underway for the second North Swindon Community Fun Day, with hopes high it can be better than last year’s inaugural event.
Judged an overwhelming success by the 4,000 who attended last summer, the organisers are hoping they can build on that this time around and attract even more people to the fun day.
Put together by a team of dedicated local residents, the aim of the event is to build up community spirit across the north of the town.
Suzi Gatward, 33, of Haydon Wick, is chairwoman of the group and says the support from people and businesses has been good.
She said: “The fun day is for everyone and is about bringing the community together. That is what I want and I think what everyone wants.
“Last year’s event was much bigger than anyone anticipated, but we want it to be even bigger.
“It is still in Brook Park but it will go on for longer and we have even more going on.
“We’ll be having live local bands and a beer tent so there is going to be a lot more going on this time.
“We have had some fantastic support from everyone.
“I think because people had such a good time last year they are looking forward to it.
“I know there is a lot of anticipation among my friends.”
However, if the event is to be a success then volunteers are needed to make sure everything goes to plan.
Helpers are needed to make sure the event is set, marshalled properly and then packed up properly afterwards.
“It is the volunteers who make sure everything goes ahead so we need as many to come forward as possible,” said Suzi.
“Last year, because the event was much bigger than we were anticipating, there were probably not enough volunteers there.
“Everything went okay but it could have been easier so we want to make sure we are prepared this time.”
As well as building community spirit the event also looks to raise money for a chosen charity.
This year they are looking to collect funds for a new Radiotherapy Unit at the Great Western Hospital.
The event will be held at Brook Park which is in Redhouse, near Isambard School, the same location as last year.
It will take place on September 5 and start at 1pm.
