KINGSDOWN Crematorium saw dozens of people visit on Saturday as staff hosted a special day to mark the venue’s 50th anniversary.
Those who attended were given the chance to have a look behind the scenes to see as well as find out about their family history.
Since it opened more than 82,000 cremations have been held, meaning Kingsdown holds a special place in the heart for many Swindon residents.
Mamie Beasant, the head of registration and bereavement services, said: “I am delighted that so many people have come and taken an interest.
“It shows just how important Kingsdown is to many people. More than 150 people have had a look behind the scenes which I think takes the fear for away.
“We have been able to put some of the stories people have heard, such as there are flames behind the curtains, to rest.”
As well as the tours and a special service, a bench was unveiled to remember two long-serving staff members who recently died.
“We had two people called Gordon who worked here and thought this was a good opportunity to pay our respect,” said Mamie.
“Gordon Alexander was the caretaker here for forty years and Gordon Crabbe played the organ here for many years.”
The day concluded with a balloon launch later in the afternoon.
