Liberal Democrat candidate Liz Webster outlines what she can offer the voters of North Swindon at this election:

I grew up in South Wales and spent my childhood summers calling bingo, giving change in the penny arcade and pulling pints in my family’s seaside business, a favourite 1970s holiday location for Welsh miners.

However, as I attended a boarding school near Chippenham and have lived in this area for 25 years, Wiltshire feels more like home After an exciting career in Saatchi And Saatchi Advertising in London, when my eldest son, Henry, turned one we decided London wasn’t ideal for family life, so moved to the Swindon area.

Soon after, my youngest son, Joe, was born and I started up my own business, a recruitment agency.

I have been placing nannies and household staff - housekeepers, butlers, gardeners etc - in private houses for more than 22 years.

In 2002, we moved to one of the RAF houses on the outskirts of Wroughton and Henry joined The Ridgeway School.

In January 2007, my worst fears were realised when my youngest son called to tell me Henry had been attacked with a hammer by a gang calling themselves ‘Asian Invasion.’ Henry sustained seven blows to his head which resulted in life saving brain surgery; we are so blessed he survived this horrific incident.

After years of lobbying, an independent inquiry was finally ordered by the High Court.

And it was established racial tensions were allowed to escalate to unacceptable levels.

And the impressionable young lives of Henry and the 13 young men who were convicted and the hundreds of children who witnessed this incident were changed forever.

Ten years on, my children have flown the nest and Henry is about to move back to the area after trying to gain a degree in Geography at Plymouth University.

Joe works as a programmer for a Slovenian remote desktop software company based in Swindon And I live with my partner with our two dogs and lots of cows on a farm just north of Swindon.

The build up of tensions and divisions around the referendum concern me enormously, which is why I joined the Liberal Democrats.

I believe this Government’s Brexit strategy is flawed and focused to only benefit the very wealthiest one per cent.

I am deeply concerned for our NHS, our schools and all services as I am absolutely committed to a fair, open and tolerant society which helps its weak and vulnerable.

KEY PLEDGES:

I believe that Britain is better off in the EU and will fight against the Conservative’s disastrous hard Brexit I believe the final decision should be made once the facts of the deal are established by the British people, not the politicians.

We will reverse all cuts to frontline school and college budgets and introduce a fairer National Funding System Over the Parliament, this means an extra £7 billion for school and college budgets.

The Lib Dems will fight to protect our NHS and social care system We pledge to increase tax by a penny in the pound to give the NHS and social care services the cash they so desperately need.

I will ensure my voice is heard. I am a good listener and compelled to help Swindon navigate through worrying times.
