Green Party candidate Andy Bentley outlines what he can off the voters of North Swindon at this election:
I’m not a career politician. I’m an IT consultant who lives in Pinehurst.
I grew up on a council estate. I owe everything to the local authority schools, libraries and public services that helped me to thrive, and the council house that gave me a secure family home as a child.
It was only when the Tory-Lib Dem coalition started to dismantle our NHS and other public services that I started to get involved.
Swindon’s Tory council has been implementing savage cuts, closing children’s centres and libraries, while forcing through the highest council tax increases in the country. They think they can get away with anything. The forced introduction of parishes across Swindon was shameful. I will seek to change the law so that can never happen again.
Only a change in the voting system will mean they can no longer rely on the safe Tory seats that keep them in power. I will fight for electoral reform.
In Europe, Theresa May wants us to sign-up to a management buy-out without us having a chance to check the small print, and with no idea about the terms and conditions she might be able to secure for us.
I believe we should be leading in Europe, not leaving it, but if we are going to leave then I believe we should be given the chance to vote on the final deal.
The Green Party is the only one with a true vision for the future of our country. We look further than just the next headline, the next manifesto or the next leadership election. Our vision is one of a happier, caring, confident Britain.
We will create thousands of decent jobs by rebuilding public services. Our plans will ensure wealth makes it into our communities rather than piling up in corporate bank accounts.
We will build truly affordable homes, including half a million new socially rented homes.
We will roll back NHS privatisation and invest in decent social care for the elderly and all those who need it We will end the scandal of working poverty by phasing in a four day working week, abolishing exploitative zero-hours contracts and ensuring that everyone is paid a proper living wage.
We will invest £7bn in our schools and abolish SATs, while returning control to local authorities. Our local education system should be planned for the future of Swindon’s children and not for academy chain profits.
Today I see foodbanks, climate change, multi-nationals who don’t pay their taxes or a living wage, families without decent homes, and I want to make a difference.
If elected I will strive to make the people of Swindon proud to have me as their MP, and I will work hard to honour their trust in me.
KEY PLEDGES
I will stand up to ensure that future generations have the same opportunities that I have had, by fighting to secure our NHS, our schools and other public services.
I will fight to make sure that everyone has a safe, affordable, secure and warm place to call home, and seek to end exploitation in the workplace.
I will work to ensure that everyone pays their fair share of tax, to crack down on tax dodging and transform the economy for the benefit of all and not just the top one per cent
In everything I do, I will put the environment at its heart. A thriving environment means a healthy future for you, your children and generations to come.
