A REVAMPED McDonald’s due to open at the end of the month will be the only one of its kind in the country.

The refurbishment of the Greenbridge Retail Park branch, which has been more than two years in the pipeline, is soon to be completed ahead of its reopening on March 27.

And the stand-out feature of the will be an overhanging drive-thru, which will allow side-by-side cars to order food to ease traffic flow.

The modern exterior will be glass-fronted, providing diners with a more scenic view than the usual McDonald’s experience.

The makeover also includes a number of extra digital features, including self-service kiosks for customers, and table service for them to order with tap of the flat screen.

McDonald’s first introduced a table service at its restaurants in 2016 in a bid to fight off competition from its main rivals and distinguish it from the likes of KFC and Burger King.

The extension will mean the restaurant will expand by 78 square metres, increasing the dining area to a total of 154.6 square metres.

The extra capacity will also see an extra 40 full and part-time jobs created.

Operations manager Jon Carpenter told the Adver: “McDonald’s Greenbridge is currently having a digital makeover.

“A new second storey, which is the only restaurant in the UK to have this type of extension, and a doubling of the seating capacity whilst extending the restaurant downstairs to enlarge the kitchen, storage and staff areas.”

The plans for the expansion were given the green light last year, despite some concerns from parish councillors in Stratton St Margaret about extra litter and and increase in traffic.

A spokesperson for the council said: “The proposed development by reason of its size, depth, width, height and massing would have an unacceptably adverse impact on the amenities of the properties immediately adjacent to the site and the surrounding area by reason of overlooking, loss of privacy and visually overbearing impact.”
