COMMUTERS taking a short cut to the M4 are being blamed for a series of near misses on Wanborough High Street.
Villager John Henshall says the road has become dangerous and he is so worried he has written to police and crime commissioner Angus Macpherson asking for action to be taken.
John Henshall wrote his letter after seeing near misses on the roundabout junction from Rotten Row onto the High Street.
His car was first hit at the junction two years ago. "It was just a clip but I felt there should be something done about it because there could be a serious accident there.
“I’ve been told that there has been no serious accidents there but I don’t think we should wait until someone is killed until somebody does something about it. It is ridiculous.
There is now a house on the corner of the junction coming out of Rotten Row into Wanborough High Street where there was a garage before which now means you cannot see up the road at what is coming.
John said the problem was commuters using the village as a shortcut: “At rush hours hundreds of people cut through Wanborough and as it is a hill they are probably going more than 30mph meaning because they’ve got right of way they jump right across the junction.
“I came out that junction very carefully and I still managed to get clipped by someone coming down the hill, he must have been doing about 60 or 70 mph.
He adds: “People shouldn’t be using that road from the Foxhill crossroads as there are signs leading down from there to the village saying ‘No motor vehicles except for access'.
“The problem is people use it as a shortcut to junction 14 and it is a very convenient little rat run up to the A419 as well. I understand why people do it, but it wouldn’t be so bad if they did it at responsible speeds.
John said he was clipped again more recently and that's when he decided to take action and ask for a stop sign to be installed. “There is nobody policing these things and there are no sanctions to deter people from using that road as a shortcut.”
Mr Macpherson said: “I thank Mr Henshall for raising his concerns regarding this junction. A response was promptly sent by my office and his concerns regarding police enforcement will be passed to the community policing team."
