A MINI-GOLF course in a cathedral that caused huge controversy was created by a Swindon firm..
The course, built by HM Adventure Golf, was both praised and criticised this week for its unusual location at Rochester Cathedral.
Opponents claimed the nine-hole course put up temporarily in the centre aisle tricks people into a search for God whereas Cathedral officials have insisted it is about building physical and emotional bridges.
Toby Robson, a sculptor for the company, said: “It was installed all fine, our clients were happy, but then it just blew up online.
“We were approached by the Rochester Bridge Trust, who are a not-for-profit organisation, and they’re basically bridge enthusiasts who deliver education on the heritage in the local area.
“We honestly didn’t think it would be controversial," he told the Adver. “I even spoke to the lady on the door at the cathedral and she said it was used for lots of different purposes, such as craft fairs and all sorts.
“I think there was a bit of a misunderstanding, not only is a cathedral for religion but it should also be looked at in a historical sense, with the amazing architecture.
“And there are still quiet places in the cathedral for people to pray, we’re not taking up the whole building, it’s massive.
He said: “I’m not religious but I love looking at the old stonework and masonry, anything that attracts people to look at the heritage is great, and it should get more funding. Personally, I see this course about the heritage of the town, the cathedral is 100 years old and the heritage should be viewed with a marriage to the religion.”
Toby, 49, added: “We’re a Swindon based company, a family-run company and we’re constantly busy.
“We started a few years ago and our bookings are constantly full because the mini-golf is just great for families, especially in the Summer holidays.
“There is plenty of room for us to grow, we’re currently based in Lydiard and we’re constantly on the look out for artists and people with good expertise in what we’re creating. The key to making these great, interesting mini-golf courses is to make sure that things like the bridges we designed for Rochester Bridge Trust are strong and playable, whether that’s going over the bridge or under it.”
