THE trousers worn by the strolling man in this image are a clue that it dates from 1979.
The presence of the Bakers Arms in the background tells us that the picture was taken toward the Emlyn Square end of Bathampton Street.
In 1966, the old Swindon Borough Council bought many Railway Village properties from British Rail and began a major renovation programme, adding modern facilities.
Work on Bathampton Street had been completed fairly recently when our photographer visited four decades ago.
The Bakers Arms closed many years later, and was reopened by the Mechanics’ Institution Trust as a community cafe last year.
